AI has changed fraud faster than most institutions have changed how they fight it. Synthetic identities are no longer the only game in town with voice cloning and deepfakes, now available as off-the-shelf capabilities for attackers, while defenders are just beginning to see real returns from AI in investigations, triage, and pattern detection. Community financial institutions sit in the middle of this shift, often with smaller teams and tighter budgets than the threats they face. We’ll walk through what's actually happening on both sides: the new attack patterns showing up at community FIs (check fraud is still popular!), where AI is and isn't ready to help on defense, and how leaders can adopt AI in fraud and BSA programs without taking on risk they can't manage.
